Subject: Light up night

Friday November 17th: This is light up night for Pittsburgh. Usual drill is
we meet at 6:30pm at the 1st Avenue garage (you can park at the garage)
near the new PNC Operations Center at the downtown end of the Eliza Furnace
Trail. We can assemble right in front of the Golden Triangle Bike Rental Shop.

If you have a roof top bike rack remember to take your bike off before you
enter the garage. There are restrooms in the garage and at the trail head.
The Pennsylvania Wheelmen are also meeting here so don't be confused with
other bikers.

1) We start riding at 7:00pm sharp!
(If you get there late you can catch the group at Station Square as we come
back from the first part of the loop)

2) You must have a helmet, lights (front and rear) and proper clothing
depending on the weather.
(You can always use a head lamp duct taped to your helmet)

3) If it is raining or below freezing we will not ride due to dangerous
road conditions.

4) We do a 8 to 10 mile ride heading out the Eliza Furnace Trail to the Hot
Metal Bridge, back through Station Square and then a circuitous climb up to
the West End Overlook, watch the fireworks and then ride down over the West
End Bridge, over 6th street and finally stop at Sanremo's Pizza on Market Street
just South of the Blvd. of the Allies for beer and pizza.
(you could bring a lock so you do not have to ride back to the garage)

5) This ride has a lot of city traffic so you need to be comfortable riding
at night with cars.

6) A mountain bike or cross bike is best but a road bike will work just fine.

7) You can bring snacks and extra clothing for when we get to the Overlook.
(it can get mighty cold while waiting for the fireworks)

This is a fun ride at a rather slow pace. The darkness and traffic make it
a bit challenging so be careful. Try to wear bright jackets and have
plenty of lights. There are some dark sections of bike trail we will be
riding on.

I will have my cell phone the night of the ride if there are any last
minute questions. Weather looks dry at this point but cool.

Chip:)

If the weather is good I am thinking about going to Pittsburgh for this ride. I think that I will be leaving around 4:30pm to make it through traffic. If anyone is interested please let me know. You will definitely need lights and appropriate clothing. Call me at 304-281-7041

The Bipolar Trail - North Bend Rail Trail

North Bend Rail Trail We drove from Wheeling, WV to the trail head outside of Clarksburg, WV, a two hour drive. The plan was to ride from Clarksburg to Parkersburg, stay overnight, and return the next day. The first few miles of the North Bend Rail Trail started out promisingly. From the Wolf Summit eastern terminus the double track trail is comprised of gravel. The trail soon turned into a challenging combination of flooded sections, flooded tunnels, single track, and finally the joy of riding on trail sections completely overgrown by grass (with ruts thrown in to make it interesting). We even interrupted a few people mowing the section of the trail that ran through their back yard. We also experienced mechanical issues, unrelated to the trail, but none the less frustrating. Several flats and the loosening of the rack attachment points on my Lemond resulted in the rack clanking for 3/4 of the ride were annoyances that we could have done without. After 29 miles we reached the town of G...

Wednesday Night Ride Report

We had four people for the Wednesday night ride. Kevin, Doug, Sarah, and I rode 32 miles. We rode the trail from Elm Grove to Wheeling, then continued up to the Brooke county line. On the return down the river we decided to ride up 1st Street towards North Park. Then we turned onto Mt Wood Road down to National Road and the Indian. We then rode down Wheeling Hill past Fulton, through Woodsdale, where Sarah left us, and down National Road to Elm Grove. Weather was nice, it was cool and clear.
